About nail fungus

Nail fungus is caused in many cases by the filamentous fungi, dermatophytes, attack the nail. The Dermatophytes are usually belonging to four species within the genera: Trichophyton , Microsporum and Epidermophyton

  1. Symptoms for nail fungus are thickened and discolored nails, or nails that crumble apart. In some cases the thickening can lead to the nail to press the nail bed and causing pain.

  2. You can treat moderate outbreaks of nail fungus on certain nails with over-the-counter medications that you apply to the nail. You may need prescription medication for severe outbreaks that cause problems. The treatment will often be long-term. In many cases, changes to nails may be due to causes other than nail fungus, such as psoriasis, eczema or damage due to ill-fitting shoes. Therefore, it is good to test whether you have nail fungus before you start a long-term treatment.

    Dermatophytes can infect both through direct contact or indirect contact, such as through the floor of the shower areas. Infection can also occur on contact with the animal .
